Packing a Honey Jar for Your Flight Out of Bali

Ni Made Suartini

Honey is a liquid to airport security. That one fact decides most packing choices. A jar in a cabin bag can get stopped. A jar in checked luggage usually does not, if it is sealed and wrapped.

If the jar is a gift, read honey as a Bali gift first. This piece is the packing half: how to get it onto the plane without a sticky suitcase.

Cabin bag

Most airlines treat honey under the liquids rule. A standard jar is larger than the usual 100 ml limit. Do not assume it will pass. If you want it in the cabin, check your airline and the airport you leave from before you pack. When in doubt, check the bag.

Checked luggage

  1. Close the lid hard. Wipe the rim dry.
  2. Wrap the jar in a plastic bag, then wrap that in clothes. Soft padding beats a hard box that cracks.
  3. Keep it upright if you can, in the middle of the suitcase, not against a zipper that will press the lid.
  4. Do not pack a jar that is already fermenting or that has a wet rim. Pressure changes do not improve a bad seal.

Which jar travels best

  • Wildflower and jungle pour more easily if the bag warms in the hold. That is normal.
  • Jelly is denser and less likely to weep through a tiny lid gap, but wrap it anyway.

Before you leave the island
